Avery Connect
Description
Avery Connect is a faith-based initiative launched in 2023 through Elk Park United Methodist Church. Its mission is to support high school students in Avery County, ages 16 and older, by helping them secure meaningful employment and develop into thriving, engaged members of the community. Avery Connect offers a seven-week paid summer apprenticeship program that begins with a one-week life skills course. Students receive a stipend for this course to help cover expenses before receiving their first paycheck. Following the course, students are placed in a six-week workplace experience aligned with their interests. Throughout the program, they benefit from community-based mentorship, practical support, and guidance. Employers participating in the program receive funding assistance to cover half of the student’s wages, and students are equipped with the necessary tools and uniforms for their job placements.
We are always seeking employers who are interested in mentoring and apprenticing motivated young people exploring potential careers in their field. Students aged 16 or older who live in Avery County are eligible to apply if they demonstrate a genuine interest in working and learning, and are committed to completing the six-week apprenticeship. Applications for the summer program open each January.
