Summer is by far the most popular season for visitors to Avery County. The days are warm and the nights are cool, providing a climate that thousands of second-home owners can not resist. The local population swells between Memorial Day and Labor Day as the mountains come alive with activity to entertain the county's summer colonists, as well as the weekenders and day-trippers that gravitate from the low country to enjoy the cool temperatures and entertaining diversions of the season.

Singing on the Mountain (fourth Sunday in June) and the Highland Games (second full weekend in July), both at MacRae Meadows at the base of Grandfather Mountain, bring thousands of visitors to the area each summer. The Chamber of Commerce also sponsors two Fine Art & Master Craft Festivals in Banner Elk each July and August. In 2016 they will be July 15-16, and August 12-13, and the High Country Beer & Wine Festival on June 25, 2016

Those who need to get moving and enjoy the scenery outdoors can take in Elk River Falls in Elk Park, or Linville Falls on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 316. These hikes are just the tip of the iceberg for avid trailblazers as opportunities abound in Avery County from the Linville Gorge in the south to Beech Mountain in the north. For the less adventurous walkers, the Riverwalk in Newland provides a peaceful stroll without the hills.

Water lovers can take advantage of a number of white water rafting outfitters, as well as the world-class fly-fishing in the local streams. But the biggest draw for the summer months are the area's numerous golf courses. There are public access courses in Seven Devils, Sugar Mountain and Newland, as well as a couple others just on the other side of our county lines.

Most importantly, though, the main thing to remember about summer in Avery County is that while they days might not always be as warm as they are off the mountain, the people are as warm as any you will find at any elevation. Come let us show you!
